Short Career of Darrem Charles

Darrem Charles had a lifelong passion for sports as a child, participating in neighborhood workouts and strength training sessions with his pals.

He started considering participating and showcasing his development on stage when he noticed physical changes in his body.

Before starting to appear on US shows, he first competed in Trinidad where he won. He would become the greatest bodybuilder to emerge from Trinidad over the following two decades.

He won numerous prestigious events, including the New York Pro Championships, and finished in the top 10 at various Mr. Olympia competitions.

Darrem made a comeback to the competitive scene at age 46, taking first place in several additional prestigious contests for competitors with classic physiques. His tale is as follows:

Biography

Infant Years

Trinidad’s Arouca is where Darrem Charles was born. He developed a passion for strength training as a young teen because he was always so focused on playing sports.

He saw physical changes as a result of the workouts he continued to do with his pals, and this encouraged him to continue playing the sport.

To grasp the fundamentals in these early phases, he purchased and read several books on bodybuilding techniques and nutrition.

Inaugural Competitions

Darren began his journey successfully after taking this information in. He competed in the 1986 WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) competition and won after a protracted period of training.

Darrem was extremely encouraged by his first-round success, but he was still adamant about achieving more success.

In front of his family and friends, he would go on to win the 1989 Trinidad Invitational Natural. Darren took this as a sign to continue his involvement in the sport. At the 1992 World Amateur Championships, he added another victory to his record.

The American Dream

Darrem had always aspired to be a well-recognized name in the American scene. In terms of international bodybuilding in the 1980s, the U.S.A. dominated. Darrem aspired to a career similar to that of legends he read about in magazines, like Frank Zane.

His participation in the Chicago Pro Invitational in 1992 made this dream a reality. Despite finishing only in 12th place, he was happy to have the opportunity to compete against bodybuilding pros.

Unaware of it at the time, Darrem was performing on a stage with future Hall of Famers like Kevin Levrone, which put him in good company for his debut pro performance.

Professional Contests

After this Chicago performance, he made appearances at the Arnold Classic, Ironman Pro, and several other important events. He captured eight top ten finishes from 1992 to 1995, including a well-earned third place at the Florida Pro Invitational in 1995.

The 1995 Mr. Olympia was a dream come true for Darrem thanks to his steady form. He competed in this show alongside Chris Cormier, Dorian Yates, Flex Wheeler, and Ronnie Coleman and finished last, but he gained a lot of knowledge from his performance.

The 1990s: Strong Finale

For Darrem, the remaining 1990s were a fruitful learning decade. At the 1995 South Beach Pro Invitational and the 1998 San Francisco Pro Invitational, he earned valuable third places, placing him in the top ten in every competition he entered.

A significant accomplishment for Darrem came after this when he finished second at the 1998 Ironman Pro Invitational. However, he was aware that he had already exerted all of his efforts and that he couldn’t win now.

In the final year of the decade, Darrem finished 13th at 1998, Mr. Olympia. As a result of this obvious improvement, he went into the new millennium confident in his ability to continue to progress in the sport.

This Millennium

Having finished third at the Toronto Pro Invitational, Darrem had a strong start to the 2000s.

To win the 2002 Southwest Pro Cup, he put months of preparation into it the following year. Despite facing stiff competition from around the world, he was able to win the competition with ease.

A win at the 2003 Maximum Pro Invitational was his follow-up performance. He was able to do this to enter the 2003 Mr. Olympia, where he placed a strong seventh and earned $15,000 for his efforts.

His victory in the 2005 New York Pro Championship ranks among his best victories from the 2000s. Darrem had to defeat Victor Martinez and others to win this show, which is a major event.

He succeeded in gaining a significant amount of well-defined mass to his upper body during the offseason, carrying this new bulk with a well-balanced aesthetic.

Before taking a break in 2013, he won several more competitions, including the 2007 Montreal Pro Championships and the 2008 Atlantic City Pro.

Visits To Magazines

Darrem was able to get noticed by prestigious magazines thanks to his success in US competitions.

He made an appearance in a volume of Pump, a well-known lifestyle publication, in the year 2000. ‘Muscular Development’ and FLEX magazine both featured a spread about him.

Aged 46 When Reentering In 2016

Darrem made a comeback to the professional competition circuit in 2016 after a three-year absence. As he was now 46 years old, he switched to the classic division, but he continued to train hard and be driven to win.

He placed second at the 2016 Pittsburgh Pro as a result of his diligence and perseverance.

He won first place at the 2016 Miami Muscle Beach, then three consecutive first places at the Puerto Rico Pro, Toronto Pro, and Wings of Strength Chicago Pro, as a result of this.

Moving up in bodybuilding

He knew he had to come to America if he was to make a name for himself and his hero was Frank Zane. In 1992, he got 12th at the Chicago Pro vs. some stiff competition which was a great experience for him being up close to guys like Kevin Levrone. In the early 90’s he would compete at the Arnold Classic, Ironman Pro, and several serious shows. His top showing was at the 1995 Florida Pro where he got 3rd place.

Mr. Olymipa

Charles first Mr. Olympia was in 1995, at 26 years old, where he got 15th place. At the ’98 Mr. Olympia, he got 13th.

Biography

Early Years

Darrem Charles was born in Arouca, Trinidad. He was always obsessed with playing sports – becoming involved with strength training as a young teenager.

As he kept working out with his friends, he began to notice changes to his physique which inspired him to pursue the sport further. He bought and read several books on bodybuilding technique and nutrition, which helped him learn the basics in these early stages.

First Competitions

After soaking in this information, Darrem got off to a successful start. After a long period of training, he won his first natural competition – the 1986 WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) contest. This victory on his first attempt was a great confidence boost for Darrem, but he was determined to win more.

He would go on to win the 1989 Trinidad Invitational Natural – wining on his home soil in front of his family and friends. This for Darrem was the signal that he had to take this sport further. He followed the win up with another victory at the 1992 World Amateur Championships.

The American Dream

Darrem had always wanted to become a well-known figure in the American scene. In the 1980’s, the U.S.A was the center of international bodybuilding. Darrem saw greats such as Frank Zane in magazines and wanted to have a career just like theirs.

In 1992, this dream became a reality when he competed at the Chicago Pro Invitational. Unfortunately, he only managed to come in 12th place, but he loved the experience of standing alongside bodybuilding pro’s.

As it happened, Darrem was actually on the same stage as future hall of famer’s such as Kevin Levrone – so was in great company for his first pro show without realizing it at the time.

Professional Competitions

Following this Chicago show, he appeared at the Arnold Classic, Ironman Pro and a number of other major shows. From 1992 to 1995, he took away 8 top ten spots including a well-deserved 3rd at the 1995 Florida Pro Invitational.

This consistent form enabled him to qualify for the 1995 Mr Olympia – a dream come true for Darrem. In this show, he stood alongside Dorian Yates, Flex Wheeler, Ronnie Coleman and Chris Cormier and came last, but learnt a lot from his appearance.

Ending the 1990’s Strong

The rest of the 1990’s for Darrem, was a useful period of learning. He came in the top ten in every competition he entered, picking up useful 3rd’s at the 1995 South Beach Pro Invitational and 1998 San Francisco Pro Invitational.

After this he took a 2nd at the 1998 Ironman Pro Invitational, which was major achievement for Darrem. He really wanted the win, but knew that he had done all he could at that point.

As the decade came to a close, Darrem also landed a 13th at the 1998 Mr Olympia. This was a clear improvement for him, so he entered the new millennium confident of his future potential in the sport.

DARREM CHARLES: THE EARLY YEARS

Darrem Charles was born on July 22, 1968, and grew up in Arouca, a small town on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. He had racked up a slew of break-dancing titles when curiosity drew him into a weight room. He was 5’9” and a whopping 115 pounds, but his flesh responded rapidly to iron. Encouraged by friends, Charles entered and won a local bodybuilding show in 1986. Then, at 154 pounds, he took the teenage Trinidad and Tobago title.

Darrem Charles placed second in both 1990 and 1991 in the light-heavy class of the IFBB World Championships and advanced to the IFBB Pro League in 1992 with a rookie class that included Ronnie Coleman and Kevin Levrone. Charles was simply too undersized to make an impact in the big league then, and if anyone had noticed they probably thought he never would. With his wife and young son, he moved to South Florida in 1995, where he began his long career as a personal trainer. That same year, he returned to pro stages. After placing third in a pro show, he entered the 1995 Mr. Olympia and landed in next-to-last place.

Darrem Charles in 1995.

The 1990s was bodybuilding’s second Golden Age (the Arnold era was the first, and it fueled the second), and Darrem Charles jostled to get noticed in talent-laden lineups. Carving out his own niche, he was the perpetually peeled dude with the pointy biceps, zippered quads, and ice cube abs. Showcasing his breakin’ background, he was also, arguably, the best poser in every show he entered. Never mind that he was competing at a slender 215 at 5’9″, his strengths propelled him into posedowns, highlighted by a second in 1998 behind only the legendary Flex Wheeler. Still, 10 years into his pro career, he had zero wins. All the while, he had been slowly growing while remaining vigilant not to blur his lines.

Doing so, means that he won’t work his central nervous system too hard by working 2 major muscle groups at the same time.

His usual split and routine is below:

Quads

  • 45 Degree leg press
  • Free-weight squat
  • Extensions
  • One-legged presses

Chest And Hamstrings

  • Flat dumbell presses
  • Incline Barbell Presses
  • Incline flyes
  • Dumbell pull-overs
  • Stiff-legged deadlifts
  • Lying leg curls

Back And Calves

  • Pull-downs to the front
  • Seated rows (machine)
  • Bent-over barbell rows
  • Deadlifts
  • Standing calf raises
  • Seated calf raises

Shoulders

  • Seated barbell press (front)
  • Dumbell side raises
  • Side laterals
  • Bent-over raises (rear delt movement)
  • Shrugs (using straight bar behind the body)

Triceps And Biceps

  • Press-down bar
  • Skullcrushers
  • Dumbell kickbacks
  • Alternating dumbell curls
  • Straight bar curls
  • Preacher curls
  • Calf Raises using leg-press machine
  • Donkey calf raises

Nutrition

Natural Diet

Darrem believes that a healthy, nutritious diet with adequate protein content is sufficient for a bodybuilder. He relies on healthy, organic foods for his meals, such as free range eggs and quality meat products.

Darrem also likes to stay relatively lean in the off-season, so doesn’t really eat ‘cheat meals’ much, as he doesn’t want to gain weight. In terms of meal frequency, he likes to eat a meals every couple of hours to stay anabolic. An example of a meal plan during the competition season is below:

  • First Meal – 10 egg whites + 2 yolks
  • Second Meal – Chicken breast, brown rice, green vegetables
  • Third Meal – Post-workout protein shake with fast acting carbs
  • Fourth Meal – Steak with brown rice and green vegetables
  • Fifth Meal – Tilapia with brown rice and green vegetables
  • Sixth Meal – Steak with green vegetable salad

DARREM CHARLES: THE PEAK YEARS

Darrem Charles’ work eventually paid off. Annually, he won at least one pro show for the seven years from 2002-2008. Partly, this was because the pro lineups had retreated from the sky-high standards of the ’90s. But mostly it was due to Charles’ persistence and his consistent high-def conditioning. He competed in a whopping 37 contests over that span, winning nine; and though he never placed higher than seventh in the Olympia or sixth in the Arnold Classic, he weighed 225-230, and his posing excellence allowed him to maximize his strengths (arms, abs, conditioning) and minimize his weaknesses (lack of back and leg size).

The mountainous biceps of Darrem Charles.
